Depression
If you experience an unusual desire to be alone, a loss of interest in your favorite activities, and a decrease in job performance, and are neglecting your appearance and hygiene, you may be suffering from more than a mild and temporary situation-dependent depression. Clinical symptoms of depression are insomnia, loss of appetite, weight loss, impotence or decreased libido, blurred vision, a sad mood, thoughts of suicide or death, an inability to concentrate, poor memory, indecision, mumbled speech, and negative reactions to suggestions. There can certainly be other reasons for some of these symptoms, and no single symptom is indicative of depression. It is the number and combination of symptoms that leads to a diagnosis of clinical depression. However, if you are having thoughts of suicide or self-harm for any reason, it is imperative that you seek help immediately.
Depression lowers your pain threshold, increases the amount of pain you feel, and adversely affects your response to trigger point therapy. There are many approaches to treating depression (see below), including medications. While antidepressants may help with the acute symptoms, many of them have side effects. Plus, some medications can exacerbate the underlying condition causing the symptoms, so a vicious cycle ensues.
