Two friends wash Allison’s hair at the Toronto General Hospital in 2014, shortly after her transplant. Little things like clean hair helped elevate Allison’s mood during her long stay. (Isaiah Jacques)

Occasionally, if the nurses weren’t busy, there were a few of them who would wash my hair with real shampoo and water. It doesn’t seem like much, but little things like clean hair helped to keep my mood elevated during my long stay. I felt better after every hair wash. Once I was able to sit in a chair, my family could awkwardly wash my hair with basins, but it was always a hassle so I didn’t like to harass them to do it often. Eventually in the Step-Down Unit, there were care workers who did daily sponge baths with actual water which felt glorious. I quickly got over the “naked in front of strangers” shyness because it was either that or never be clean. There wasn’t much of an option.
