Chapter 16
Jesse wanted to slam his fists into the wall. Why did he feel so much like fighting all the time, he was trapped like a rabbit, caught by a fox and he didn’t have anything to fight back. He knew for sure that his death warrant had practically been signed, dated, and officially stamped. His death certificate was as good as legal and printed in the town paper, the thing is no one would see his death, no one would hear about it. He’d just be dead. Carlson had sent in his telegrams after Jesse.
He flung his hat across the room, and let out a shaky breath.
His stint as a telegraph operator had done him service today. The dots and dashes had told of Mr. Carlson’s telegram betrayal. Jesse’s telegram hadn’t been sent at all. Instead a nice letter to someone’s mother had been sent. Carlson’s note had dictated that all the money in Jesse’s account be forwarded to Jesse at once, because he: found an investment that couldn’t be passed on and brought immediate rewards.
Once they had the money, he’d be a dead man...the thing is they would never get the money. The bank address was really a home address...the home of Ruby’s mother and Grandfather. They would know that he was with Ruby, it wouldn’t take them long to figure the rest out. They would never, send the money; he didn’t want them to send the money. Thankfully banks took a little while to reply, so that bought him a little time. Precious little, but that wasn’t the telegram he had to worry about the most.
It was a message to someone on the east coast to look up the worth of a Miss Sophie Morgan, who hailed from Boston. There was no knowing how long that person would take to get back to Carlson, hours, days? What if at this moment he was riding to the ranch with the man’s answer. They’d be dead, or at least like mice cornered by a cat...a cat that would not show mercy.
That worried him too. He was known for taking his time slowly, painfully drawing someone in, then why had he jumped at Sophie? Was he desperate? What was biting his heels?
Jesse let out a painful sigh and slumped into a chair. When he had returned, he’d had to see Sophie, it was a good thing he didn’t know any or all of this. Her innocence might be the one thing that would save her life if...if it all came to naught. Opening his trunk he pulled out his saddle bags which he had tucked away, and ripped open the liner, he took out the last flask of his own “special” label. Beside it was a tiny bottle marked cologne, inside was chloroform, he’d packed it in case Ruby wasn’t willing to accept his rescue. Now it might serve a better purpose on the nanny.
Closing his eyes, he began to pray. Not for himself, for Sophie and Ruby. Even if
