Staffordshire Name Indexes has an online index of admissions and discharges for Staffordshire workhouses between 1836 and 1900 (www.staffsnameindexes.org.uk); this includes neighbouring Poor Law Unions such as Stourbridge and Tamworth where Birmingham paupers may have been returned. Note that Harborne and Smethwick – both in Staffordshire – were part of Kings Norton Poor Law Union. Handsworth was part of West Bromwich Poor Law Union; records are at Sandwell Archives.

The pre-1834 poorhouses were supervised by the overseer of the poor, but there was no legal requirement to keep records of those housed. References to inmates are most likely to be found amongst the papers of the parish overseer. A Warwickshire Poor Law Index, including Birmingham records prior to Incorporation, has been transcribed and published by Midlands Historical Data. The BMSGH has a similar index for Warwickshire, compiled separately, which is open to email enquiries (see Annex). Minute books and other early workhouse records are in LoB series MS 754–6. Settlement records related to the poor law are discussed in Chapter 7.
