The reward desert
Being rewarded nourishes a person, allows her to bloom. Toxic places offer no rewards, just threats, fear and punishment. Rewards don’t only come in financial shape, though a pay increase is always welcome. Even more effective are praise, trust and involvement. Bad managers praise nobody and involve only members of their impenetrable clique. If you work in a stressful environment where you receive no praise, where you aren’t involved and aren’t trusted, you are in a toxic place. Beware, because unless you look after yourself very carefully, you will be at risk of succumbing to stress.
