Chapter Five
Lucas wolfed down the eggs and appeared to want more. They needed to leave, but Brett wouldn’t deny him food. The sun had already set, adding danger to their escape. He stepped outside, surprised to find that the temperature had dropped even more. The wind whipped the snow, causing near whiteout conditions. He couldn’t see to the edge of the yard, making any trek dangerous. Even if Lucas were healthy, the march back to his truck would be dangerous. With the steady snowfall, he doubted Bob could make it home tonight. The roads had been horrible when he’d shown up earlier, now they were probably impassable. Lucas needed to eat more and rest. If Bob came back, he’d take care of business.
He went back into the house, stomping the snow off his boots. Lucas stood up, his eyes wide with fright. Brett held up his hand, “Please, don’t worry about the mess. You are free, no longer this jerks slave.”
Lucas sunk down on the chair, closed his eyes and shivered. Brett knew Lucas would take time to adjust, and he shouldn’t antagonize him, but he wanted Bob to pay for his abuse. He’d trash the bastard’s house if Lucas weren’t with him.
“More eggs coming up.” Brett moved to the refrigerator, pulling out the carton of eggs.
“Heck, I want something sweet too.” Lucas stood from the chair. He took a few tentative steps, wincing in pain with each move of his legs.
From the corner of his eye Brett caught Lucas grimace. “I’m going to search for some
painkillers before we take off. How about some cereal with milk?” Brett pulled a carton out of the fridge and grabbed a box of frosted flakes from the pantry.
“Sure, sounds good.” Lucas leaned against the counter next to the oven.
He looked so small in the clothes swamping his body. The bastard had starved Lucas and he’d lost so much weight. Every time Brett looked at the man, pity surged inside, leaving him desperate. But he knew enough to keep quiet because that sentiment would come out wrong.
Focus on his safety, nothing else.
With the second helping of eggs eaten and two bowlfuls of cereal for each of them, Lucas sat back in his chair, his head propped up as he rubbed his belly. Before Brett went to search the place for painkillers, he caressed Lucas’s cheek, earning him a tremulous smile.
Brett didn’t want to leave Lucas’s in the kitchen, but he needed to find the analgesics. He rummaged through the first aid kit, but found nothing. The cabin was small, but it didn’t matter, being more than a few feet away from Lucas made him disoriented. He feared Bob coming home, bursting in and seeing Lucas free. But what if it was more than just the fear?
Lucas was beautiful, and not just his body, every part of him was special. When they
touched, Brett’s entire body went hot. The answer stared him in the face, but accepting responsibility for walking away after the whole Amos thing had him wondering if Lucas would be better off with someone else.
