In other sectors too, remnants of German units that had found their way back to the Oder, crossed to the west bank. On 25 January, a reorganisation of the entire Eastern Front went into effect. Heeresgruppe A was designated Heeresgruppe Mitte, and Heeresgruppe Mitte became Heeresgruppe Nord. Formations between Heeresgruppe Mitte, in Silesia, and Heeresgruppe Nord, in East Prussia, were designated Heeresgruppe Weichsel i.e. Vistula. What had formerly been Heeresgruppe Nord in Kurland, became Heeresgruppe Kurland. Re-numbering of various field-post numbers ensued. The commander in chief of the 4th Panzer-Armee was General der Panzertruppe Gräser, whose command post was in Glogau. He immediately set about building a front along the Oder using the remnants of retreating divisions, soldiers who had lost contact with their units, and the Volkssturm. Contact was established with the south wing of the 9th Armee near Lissa, in the Warthegau. In the ensuing days, the 9th Armee then assumed command of the defence in the Oder sector, between Guben and Frankfurt.
