Twenty-One

Ekon

My task from the council had not been resolved in one day as I had hoped. Though I managed to secure the letter from Dayo, I simply could not show up at an elder’s home unsolicited. To make matters worse, Father refused to procure me a seat at the Etikun elder meeting unless I showed him my current living situation. I had called in an emergency lesson from Nika so I would be able to serve dinner to my parents.

Thankfully, some good had come from the prison visit. Ladipo had agreed to write off a full eight hours from my community service total, though it had only been a six-hour day. Once a meeting with the elders was arranged, he would send a palace runner to attend with me. The elder meeting would count toward my community service as well.

I peeked through the clear pot lid at the rice medley before checking on the chicken. Everything appeared ready. Nika had left ten minutes ago with instructions to leave the rice on low until my parents arrived. The time on my mobile showed about five minutes before they would knock on my door. Father was never late.

Which meant I needed to change my shirt now. The T-shirt I had worn to cook in looked like the spice cabinet had attacked it. I headed for my closet and reached for a dark-green button-down shirt. My shorts were traded for starched slacks, and a spritz of cologne finished my cleanup.

Just as I turned off the stove, the doorbell rang. I gulped. What would Father say? I eyed the living room, which now sported a brown sofa set. The couch held two pillows in a tan-black pattern that had come with the furniture. A pottery plate collection hung on the wall above the couch, adding a nice touch of decor.

I was no interior designer, but I had watched my mother redecorate enough times to know if pieces went well or if they clashed. I could only hope she would be pleased with my efforts.

I rushed to the door and unlocked it. “Ẹ kúròlé, Bàbá, Màmá.” I held the door wide for them to enter.

Mother’s gaze roamed my home, and her ebony cheeks bunched with joy. “Ekon! How lovely.”

I let out a sigh. One parent’s approval, check. “Thank you. Would you like a tour?”

“She can have a tour later,” Father interjected. “I assume you have something prepared to feed us.”

My jaw ticked. “Yes, Father. Please follow me.” I guided them out back, where I had set up an outdoor eating area. “If you will have a seat, I will bring dinner to you.”

“You expect me to eat outside?”

“Ise,” Mother hissed.

I held my breath, waiting for his pronouncement.

“Very well.” He unbuttoned his dinner jacket and took a seat.

“I will be right back.”

“We are in no rush, Ekon.” Mother patted my hand.

I dashed into the kitchen, plating the food like Nika had recommended. I steadied a plate on my forearm, then put the second in my left hand, leaving the third plate for my empty right hand.
