When he was getting ready to return to Italy after a two-year absence (he had left his homeland on May 26, 1922, and would return on May 12, 1924), Gramsci had a clear plan that willingly leaned on the Comintern to renew the PCdI by giving it a new political and ideological direction. That direction was opposed to Bordiga, from whom Gramsci had gradually begun to keep his distance, without openly breaking with him. All that remained for Gramsci was to convince the majority of cadres and party leaders of his theses. No sooner had his feet touched Italian soil than he began tackling this new task.
