Chapter 12
JOSH
I stepped out of the recruitment office with the weight of the military off my shoulders. Well, at least the commission part. There were some Lordâs son who were there waiting to purchase a commission, which made the process go smoother than I had hoped.
You never actually left the military once you serve. It was in your blood the rest of your life, especially with what I had been through in the war against France. I had so many close friends and comrades who have been through more than any man should ever have to go through in such a short amount of time, or ever. I have seen more death on the battlefield and have fought for my life more than a few times, but it was time to start a new adventure. I hoped tonightâs dinner would lead me in the right direction.
I still had a few more hours to squander before it was proper to meet with Amelia. I didnât want her to think me an eager and impatient gentleman, even though I couldnât wait to see her.
Instead of calling a hackney, I decided to walk down the street toward Hyde Park. While there was still a little bit of chill in the air since it was early spring, but it didnât bother me. Iâve faced worst weather than this.
I thought about the times I would force my men to move around when they would complain of the winter chill that the fire didnât even help subside. Getting their blood moving did more to our survival in the war, than waiting for the enemy to catch us cold and unaware.
My gut clenched as my mind flooded with memories over the years of being in the military, and now being free of it, I started to second guess if I should have stayed.
It was too late now.
Then again, if I didnât head to London to sell my commission, I might not have run into Amelia. Her alone made it worth it.
I took a big breath, knowing I was getting ahead of myself. While I knew her situation thanks to her solicitor, my job had just started. I was going to use every trick in the book to make that girl mine.
I chuckled to myself. If any of the other officers could see me now, they would call me a lovesick fool. I looked up to see a couple staring at me.
I must seem mad. Maybe I was? But I didnât care. So, I tipped my hat to them and kept on walking.
As I came up to Hyde Park, I saw a woman on the curb selling flowers. I made my way up to her and looked over the variety she had before picking enough to make a bouquet.
âCould you arrange these for me, Miss?â
âOf course, your Lordship,â she took them from me, and I watched her work her magic.
âFor a young miss, I presume,â she asked with a toothy grin.
I smiled widely, not even trying to hide the truth, as she handed me the bouquet.
