Chapter Ten

He had no idea where he was going but started down the road anyway, the same backpack he’d hit town with slung over one shoulder. He still wore his bloody clothes. So much for a shower and relaxation.

But even as he walked down the road with no destination in mind, he couldn’t find any anger toward his parents. They were as much victims of the situation as Eli and Alvin. They were doing their best to live their lives, follow God’s plan and the church, and raise their family. The unfortunate aspect of the situation was that he was a problem.

Titus hadn’t planned on being an issue, nor did he want to be an issue, but he was all the same. He kicked a rock at the edge of the road and kept walking. He headed toward town thinking maybe he would run into somebody. Maybe they could go in town and have a piece of pie at Kauffman’s or a cookie at Esther Lapp’s bakery. Just shoot the breeze for a little bit, but another part of him realized that his fantasy was so five years ago. The friends he had now were married and starting families. They didn’t have a great deal of time to do single outings. Not unless they had been planned well in advance. His only friends who weren’t married now were Eli and Jonah. He supposed one of them could take him in, but since they both lived at home how long would it be before their parents started to feel that he was being a bad influence on their families?

It wasn’t fair. He hated to say those words because hardly anything ever was fair. But this truly wasn’t fair. His parents were expecting him to make a decision over something that the bishop didn’t expect him to make for another month. Why couldn’t they wait? Why couldn’t they let him think about it? That was all he wanted, a little time to make sure his head was clear, make sure his thoughts were right, and make sure he could stay in Wells Landing and live the life that once upon a time God had intended for him to live.

He had no doubts about that. Five years ago that had been part of God’s plan for him. To live in Wells Landing, get married to Mandy, have babies, raise a family, build a house, etc., etc., like all good Amish men do. He had been fine with that. Happy, even. But then God’s plan had fallen apart.

He shook his head. That was where the doubts came in. How could going to jail have been a part of God’s plan? His mind couldn’t fathom that God wanted him to suffer through all the horrors and trials he endured in prison. No man should have to go through that. But it had happened, and it had made him a different person. Now he wasn’t so sure about God’s plan. How did a person find God’s plan once he lost track of it? He didn’t know.
