Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder (or condition) with impairment of a child’s ability to interact and communicate socially.

How common is ASD?

According to the latest research, one out of every hundred people will have an ASD.

What causes ASD?

Despite ongoing research, it is not clear what causes ASD. There may not be a single cause and as with Tourette syndrome, multiple genes may be involved resulting in ASD features.

Characteristics of ASD

The characteristics of ASD vary from individual to individual, with a range of severities of presentation. People with ASD have what is usually described as a triad of impairments:

•difficulty with social interaction

•difficulty with social communication

•restricted and repetitive stereotyped behaviour.
