Fig. 5.1 VERIS venn diagram.

The VERIS framework schema is comprised of five sections.

Each section includes items unique to its section to better help

define the security event. The goal of this schema is to provide

the enterprise with information that can help to determine the

cause and measure the severity. The goal, however, is not to collect every last bit of data related to the security event. The VERIS framework has the intent to provide actionable data without needing to provide completeness. The five main sections that make up the VERIS framework are incident tracking, victim demo-graphics, IR, discovery and response, and impact assessment. 7 VERIS Venn Diagram, VERIS Community (and Verizon RISK Team), online, http:// veriscommunity.net/veris-overview.html .

As at the time of writing, the current version of the VERIS

framework defines objects using JSON. 8 Example 1 9 includes a

JSON classification from the VERIS website outlining a single inci-dent in which a company sensitive document was emailed to a personal email address. VERIS supports a community database, the VERIS Community Database ( VCDB), which is available online. It includes updates from the Verizon RISK Team where data can be anonymized along with support from the VERIS community.
