Chapter 20
Landon and Nysa were headed back toward to airport. It was a totally different scene than earlier that morning. The ride on the way to the airport and on the plane was just so quiet; Nysa didnât know what to say to Landon.
âSweetie, are you ok?â Nysa asked after thinking of a thousand ways to initiate the conversation.
âYeah, Iâm ok!â
All the way back from the JFK, Landon barely said two words to Nysa. When they finally got off the plane and got into the car, Nysa had the driver pull over for a couple minutes.
âWHY ARE WE STOPPING?â Landon asked, very irritated.
âLANDON, WE ARE NOT MOVING THIS CAR, NOT UNTIL YOU TALK TO ME!â
âWHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY? THAT I HATE MY FATHER RIGHT NOW?â
âYEAH, LANDON! SAY SOMETHING. CRY. CURSE. SAY ANYTHING! You are going to say something. You are not going to sit here and keep everything bottled up! Landon, I donât know how you feel right now.â
âI feel numb. I really want to hate my father so bad right now. But I just canât. I wasnât raised like that. I still love him!â
âSweetie, you can talk to me. If not to me, you need to talk to somebody. I donât want to see you slip back into depression again. Landon, let me take you out for a change.â
Laughing, Landon asked, âReally, you want to take me out?â
âI can take my gorgeous man out to dinner! You might have to settle for something like a red lobster,â Nysa replied, giggling.
âOk, letâs go somewhere and eat.â
âWe both have had a long day, so I will call Uncle Larry and tell him that you canât make it to the meeting. We will go to dinner, and then you will return to my condo with me. You will lay your head in my lap and go to sleep. You are not going anywhere tonight.â
After some hours, Nysa took Landon out to dinner. While they were eating, Nysa told Landon that she would go to the ladiesâ room, but she really went to call Uncle Larry.
âHey, Uncle Larry!â Nysa said after waiting for seconds to hear the voice on the other end of the call.
âHey, Nysa! Howâs Boston? Is Landon trying to make you do all of the work?â
âWell, we had to cut our trip short!â
âIs everything alright?â
âNo, Uncle Larry, actually, things are pretty bad.â
âDid you and Landon have a fight or something?â
"No, weâre fine! Our relationship is fine. Uncle Larry, at this point, Landon will need all the help he can get. I canât really explain it. I canât stay on the phone for long. Landon is really in bad shape, a lot worse than when Mrs. Lori died. He wonât be able to meet with you tonight. I finally got him to calm down. Please come over in the morning around 9 or 10, but call first.â
âNysa, whatâs going on? Whatâs wrong with Landon?â
âI canât tell you. I will let Landon tell you tomorrow.â
âIâm coming over tonight.â
âNO, UNCLE LARRY.
