Their hiking plans went out the window as the clock ticked past forty-five minutes since they’d been waiting to speak to a bank representative at the Scotiabank. Kellen had been on edge ever since they’d walked through the establishment’s glass doors, but he’d kept it masked to avoid bringing out whatever it was that had come roaring out of Bailey before. He hadn’t meant to pull her out of the room like he had, but the look on her face had been one of murderous intent. She had looked at Mr. D’enard like she’d looked at him the night before, and he’d pulled her away to prevent the same rampage she’d taken out on him.

But then, just like that, she was Bailey again. It wasn’t even as though she was only partially herself. She went from zero to sixty, and then right back again. And again, just like last time, she’d felt feverish.

“You think I’m crazy don’t you?” she asked, not meeting his eyes.

He shrugged. “Would it matter?”

“What do you mean?”

I’m already in love with you. Crazy can’t change that.

“Nothing.”

Suddenly, a woman that had been in the teller line turned around as she put her wallet back into her purse, and he automatically sprang up and walked over to her. She saw him and immediately hung her head, trying to avoid his gaze, but he blocked her path to the door while at the same time blocking her from Bailey’s view.

“You know something,” he accused.

“I’m sorry, sir, I have to—

“What are you hiding? You have to tell me something, Miss Inez. Bailey’s not doing so well.”

The woman’s breath caught and she looked up. “What happened?”

“She went back to the house in the middle of the night while I was sleeping, and when I found her, let’s just say she wasn’t acting like herself.”

“How was she acting?”

“I don’t know how to explain it.” He squeezed the back of his neck. “Wild? Feral?”

“Possessed?”

There was that damn word again.

“I don’t know what that even means,” he half-lied. “Look, I’ve heard stories. My parents have told me stories and folktales but I’ve never been inclined to believe them…much. I like to err on the side of logic, but sometimes a baby comes across my table with a five-percent chance at life and not only lives, but thrives. A brain defect shows up on an ultrasound that just vanishes at birth.”

Inez shook her head. “You are talking about miracles, sweetheart. This is not that.”

“Then tell me what this is.”

“I already tell you.” She touched her stomach. “It is something in her. You can be possessed by more than a spirit.”

“What, are you saying she’s pregnant?” Kellen asked. “That’s impossible, we just had s…that’s impossible.”

“The womb is the perfect chamber,” Inez said. “It is where life starts. Women, we hold our energy here.”

The woman was speaking in circles. “Which means?”

“Your girlfriend has secrets.”

“That she’s keeping from me? Please, Miss Inez. I don’t even know what I’m asking you, but if you know anything, about Bailey’s family, about that house, just tell me.
