“ Heavens, I’m not late am I?” the Countess asked when she stepped into the room, checking the time on a small pocket watch she pulled from the sleeve of her dress.

“No, no. I’m quite early. I didn’t wish to get lost and be late myself. There are so many rooms compared to back home.”

“This is your home now.”

“Yes. Of course. My Apologies.”

How foolish of her to say that. Of course this was her home now. She just hoped she had not offended the Lady or made a bad impression of herself.

As a child she had only seen the Countess once or twice, and again at her husband’s funeral. She hadn’t had many chances to speak with her, and she had never spoken to her son either. Caleb's father.

“Well, shall we take a seat?”

Elara followed the woman’s lead to the table, relieved to see only the two places set so she knew where to sit. She startled when a tall man rushed up behind her to pull out her chair and push it back in again.

“T-thank you,” she muttered, nodding her head to the man whose face coloured a little at her attention before she turned back to the Countess.

“Is Caleb not joining us?”

“No, I wished to speak with you alone.”

So far as Elara was aware she hadn’t done anything wrong, but she felt like she was in trouble for something with how the Countess watched her, making her squirm in her seat.

“Let’s get straight to the point.”

“P-pardon?”

“I wish to know your intentions toward my grandson.”

“My intentions?” Elara asked, unsure what the woman was implying, and quite frankly a little annoyed by it.

Clearly Caleb had not informed her, or the staff that this was merely an arrangement between them, and his grandmother certainly didn’t appear pleased in his choice of wife. But she would not have this woman thinking that she had lured him into this somehow.

“I’ll have you know, Countess, that it was Caleb who offered himself to me. I have no ill intent towards your Grandson. In fact, I am very fond of him.”

“You said fond. Do you not love him?”

“I-” Elara paused considering how she could answer the woman.

She wouldn’t say that she loved him as a woman loved a man, but she did care deeply for him. There was an attraction there most certainly, but she didn’t believe her desires to be close to him counted as love.

“There are many couples who do not marry for love,” she answered at last, unsure what more she could say.

“Are you looking for a title, or perhaps money?”

“Titles mean little to me, as they do him. I’ve already requested that your staff call me by my name and not some title. As for money, Caleb and I have already discussed this. I do not require fancy dresses or elaborate gifts. I just wish for my family to be provided for.”

Elara tried to hold back the bitterness from her tone as she answered the Countess straight forward questions, feeling like she was under interrogation.
