Chapter 8

The first batch of cookies was a disaster, but soon, Ada had it figured out, and the smell of baking sugar, butter, and eggs filled the little cabin with dreams of delight.

“Oh, for a cookie sheet,” Ada groaned as she lifted the iron skillet from the coals. “Even some aluminum foil would be a dream come true.”

“Aluminum, what?” Cole stepped through the door, lifting his nose and making his ice-covered beard crackle.

“Foil,” Ada said, placing the pan on a slate tile to cool. “It’s like paper but made from aluminum.”

Cole raised a brow but didn’t say anything and Ada giggled. He still didn’t believe she was from the future, but he was stuck with her, so she wasn’t going to push. They could figure something out in the spring, or perhaps Dr. Lachele would have a new plan.

Her eyes strayed to Cole, hanging his heavy red and black wool coat on a peg by the door. If she had to leave in the spring, she would miss this man. Cole might not believe she was from the future, but he was kind. He had rescued her from a near-death experience, taken her in, cared for her, and started teaching her about life at the Lake. She hadn’t even known him for two weeks, but Ada realized that Cole Stalten, with his bushy beard, rough ways, and relatively thick stature, was more of a man than the jerk had ever been.

“You are literally frozen,” Ada said, pointing at the man’s whiskers.

“But my face is warm.” He grinned and ice crackled, falling to the floor as it melted off the tawny hair. “Something sure smells good.”

“I found everything I needed to make cookies,” Ada grinned. “Nothing fancy, but after the first disaster, they seem to be coming out okay.”

Cole walked over, looked at the iron skillet and the lightly browned, golden discs of goodness.

“I’d just fill the whole skillet with the dough if it were me,” he laughed. “I’m lazy that way.”

“Oh, that’s a great idea. Too bad we don’t have any ice cream to go with it.”

Cole shook his head. This woman had some strange notions. She talked like you could have ice cream any time of year. “Ice cream? In winter?”

“What better time. We could freeze it in the snow.”

Cole scratched his head, his long hair plastered to his head in the shape of his trapper’s cap. “What would you need?”

Ada tapped her lips with an index finger, eyes focused on the ceiling. “Hm? Milk, sugar, maybe eggs and flavoring.”

Cole ran a hand behind his neck, looking at her from below bushy brows. “Do you think king syrup is a flavor? And would powdered eggs work?”

“I think so,” Ada’s brow pinched in concentration. “If I cooked it all into a base like custard, I think it would come together. We could make it in your enameled saucepan.” The woman hurried to the shelf above the mock sink, pulling down the green enamel pot. “Once it’s mixed, we can bury it in the snow and stir it now and then.
