After all, he’d been right, time after time: about his ability, about Fortuna ware, about London and Liverpool, about how perfect they were for each other. Bianca had once thought their marriage was a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, but now recognized it as the best thing that had ever happened to her. To both of them.

Yet still he sat there, taut and waiting for her opinion. As he always did. Will you trust me? he’d once asked. She did. Always would.

“Let’s do it,” she whispered, and Max grinned, fierce and proud.

“Yes, Mr. Montclair,” he said to the visitor. “We would be very pleased to discuss that sort of partnership.”
