The new couple shared a love of dancing and reading. There’s no reason to believe they didn’t genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Although Henry was immense by then, this wasn’t a pity marriage. Henry took those dazzling jewels that had been Katherine Howard’s and showered them on her successor. “All that glittered” was a royal girl’s best friend, especially if she had an uncompromised neck on which to display them.
Catherine Parr had been Wife #6 for three years when she nearly landed herself in a heap of trouble. She’d held a soft spot for Protestants who were viewed as heretics, probably because she herself subscribed to the new faith but kept it hush-hush from the king. In fact, she had a friend named Anne Askew, who was an enthusiastic preacher of Reformist ideals and ended up taking quite a bit of heat for it, so to speak. When the woman was questioned at length on her beliefs, she passionately denied the concept of transubstantiation and was tossed into the Tower. Racked within an inch of her life, and then having sat on a bare floor for two hours arguing her case, she held her ground and needed to be brought to her fate at the stake by chair, since the torture rendered her near-broken.
Catherine’s sympathy for women such as Anne Askew, plus her spirited religious debates with her husband, plus Henry’s state of mind (paranoid, angry, and in pain from his oozing leg sore) all added up to his idea to have a warrant drawn up for Catherine’s arrest when the rumor got out that she was trying to bring down the king’s religion. Although he signed it, his servant dropped it and it was found by Catherine’s own servant. That was close!
