Everyone on that ship understood what a covenant entailed. Hutchinson, her allies, and her opponents all predicted that God would punish Massachusetts if it did not heed them. Much of the remainder of Genesis chronicles the plight of the Israelites.

The remaining books of this section of the Bible, Numbers, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy, contain rules and census figures and describe the final arrival of the Israelites at the border of Israel after forty years of wandering in the deserts.

The book of Joshua depicts the taking of the Land of Israel through a combination of war and God’s mighty acts. The Israelites displaced the local people, killed as many as possible, and destroyed everything in their path at God’s order. However, they were not able to completely control the land, and many local people remained; these were subdued more placidly.
