Chapter 8
Maggy
Maggy was riding high. Even though Butch was now in jail, she couldn’t contain her happiness and sense of satisfaction. Butch would be all right. There wasn’t anything she could do anyway. And on top of that, she had called Blake and he had promised to look after Butch until his parents could be found. She had done her job. She had exposed the brutal actions of a self-serving police officer to the public. It felt good to get even, even if it wasn’t the same police officer. She had been fuming since that patrolman made the pass at her.
She had been coming back to Newport after a thanksgiving visit to one of her girl friends in Corvallis. She was going a bit to fast, she admitted to the patrolman when he pulled her over. He informed her that she was doing sixty in a forty-five. She was wearing a short skirt and when the patrolman looked down at her, through the driver’s window, he couldn’t keep his eyes off her legs. Her skirt had bunched up as she drove, and he might have thought that she had done this on purpose, but that still hadn’t given him the right to make an obscene pass at her. It wasn’t so much that he asked her out as it was the look on his face, and the implication of it all. She still got angry when she thought about the whole thing. As far as she was concerned, all policemen were power hungry, authority grabbing egomaniacs. Why else was it that they won’t cooperate with the press, with other law enforcement agencies and even with each other.
Well, she couldn’t think about that now. Life couldn’t be any better. She had broken the story of a lifetime. Most reporters only dream of stumbling into the kind of story that would make her career. The event that set her future on a rocket course came from small town America. These kind of things were common enough in the larger cities, but not in towns the size of Newport. That one story along with a month of follow-up articles had made her future. Every newspaper editor and reporter in the northwest knew her. She was a regional hero. Every paper in the northwest had carried her story. All three of the major networks ran her story as well as CNN. She was even interviewed on Good Morning America. Everyone seemed to be interested in this brutality case in Oregon State. When she came to The Newport News in the small town of Newport, Oregon, she thought she would have to spend her life in obscurity, but that move had been the best thing she had ever done.
Not only was she rewarded with praise and a sense of accomplishment, but also she was rewarded financially as well. Newspaper circulation had never been better, both in new subscriptions and in daily sales, than during the month that her stories ran. The Newport News also made quite a bit of money selling the stories to other newspapers.
