Of the hundreds of nutritional supplements that are commercially available, several others may help with blood sugar fluctuation, mood instability, lack of energy, withdrawal symptoms and cravings while trying to break the sugar habit. Probiotics such as acidophilus will enhance beneficial intestinal bacteria and facilitate the absorption of healthy alternatives to simple sugars; since many people who overuse sugar have irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive symptoms, a probiotic will help these also. The usual recommendation is 2 capsules with 1 to 5 billion friendly organisms each, taken three times a day with meals. Sugar overuse may deplete the adrenal glands, and they are needed during the stress of withdrawal and detoxification; adrenal supplements or glandular can increase strength and energy at 25 to 50 mg a day.
Coenzyme Q, also called coQ10 or ubiquinone because it is found almost everywhere, may have a variety of health benefits, but is an effective if expensive tonic and energy enhancer; around 100 mg daily is recommended.
Lecithin refers to a group of fats that are prominent in the brain and are among other things made into the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which when supplemented may help with memory, energy and mental clarity. The appropriate dose is uncertain, but around 2 capsules twice or three times a day is recommended.
Lipoic acid is an antioxidant and facilitates the metabolism of complex carbohydrates, which are recommended in place of simple sugars; the usual daily dose is 20 to 50 mg.
Pancreatic enzymes are mainly taken by people with cystic fibrosis or other forms of pancreatic insufficiency, but may strengthen a pancreas stressed by sugar overuse and facilitate the metabolism of healthier alternatives at a dose around 400 mg three times daily.
S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe) is the amino acid methionine combined with the energy storage molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It enhances the production of serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine, so can have multiple effects on the brain, chiefly antidepressant and antianxiety, as well as facilitating liver function. It must be used very cautiously in those with bipolar disorder, as it may trigger episodes of mania.
