In a landmark 1991 study, researchers from the Poynter Institute used Eye-Trac technology (a device that tracks eye movements) to monitor how readers read newspapers. They found:
Photos are usually the first thing readers see on a page, even before headlines.
Readers process photographs 75 percent of the time (as compared to 56 percent of the time for headlines and 25 percent of the time for text).
