CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

He’d performed about as badly as she’d expected, but Agnes was glad it had not hurt. Truthfully, she hadn’t known how her body would react to being penetrated—would she tear and bleed all over his sheets?—but, when it was over, and Charles had collapsed in giddy, sated pleasure at her side, Agnes knew everything was going to be all right.

She wasn’t hurt. She wasn’t victimized. It was as if she’d never been torn up down there at all.

Beaming, she rolled over and planted a loud, wet kiss squarely on Charles’ lips. “Well, what you think?”

“I liked it. Let’s do it again.”

Agnes laughed. “Of course, you’d be chomping at the bit for another go at me shiny, new cunny.”

Charles laughed, too. “I promise, I’m not usually like this. I don’t know what you’ve done to me…”

“I made a man out of you.”

“So I was a boy earlier?” He kicked up an eyebrow. “Do I look like a boy to you?”

She smiled, shaking her head. No, he most definitely did not look like a boy. Her Charles was all man, from the tips of his big feet to the top of his damp, dark head.

“Is this something a boy would have?” He rocked himself against her hip.

Agnes giggled and squirmed. Before she could get away, he pinned her between his arms and legs, peppering sloppy kisses all over her. She grabbed a handful of his sweaty hair, and hauled him to her lips.

They’d done the deed, yet Charles was in no hurry to hitch up his trousers and go. He did not seem to want her to go, either. Unlike previous customers, he didn’t spit rude remarks, or act ashamed of what they’d done. He did not throw money at her, or pretend she no longer existed.

This must be how real couples behaved in bed. This laughing, flirting playfulness was why clever girls gave up their dreams, and settled down with husbands and babies, instead.

Agnes stroked his hair while he kissed her. This could not last, she reminded herself. She’d never get her hat shop if she spent the rest of her life here, locked away with Charles. When this fairy tale ended tomorrow, she would have to go back to the streets.

She would have to sell her body to other men.

“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” She’d gone stiff in his arms.

Agnes forced herself to relax. “Nothing’s wrong. Everything is perfect.”

Oh, he knew she was lying, but had the good manners not to call her bluff. Perhaps Charles wanted to savor the fantasy a little while longer, as well.

“This has been the very best of birthdays. Thank you for sharing it with me. Will you…will you think of me this time each year? Pause, just for a moment, and remember me?”

Agnes raised her hand to caress his face. If she could have it her way, she’d share every birthday with him from this night on. The thought of parting from him—for years, forever—made her physically ill. She wasn’t sure whether she was going to cry or be sick.
