Rees came out of an immense darkness into the light. It was faint at first, an opalescent brightness like that of a cat’s eye. He was aware that his head was one solid mass of pain and also that he was lying flat on his back on a hard surface. Sound came to him then, a hollow sound with the buzz and hum of voices, none of which he could make out.

Carefully he opened his eyes fully and saw forms moving in the sooty darkness. He tried to sit up, and the pain came then, like a dagger driven through his temples. He groaned, reached up, and found that his hair was stiff with blood and his scalp was torn. Automatically he said, “The bleeding isn’t stopped yet,” and then he was aware of someone beside him. Gritting his teeth, he tried to sit up, and then he felt an arm beneath him. “Take it easy, Doctor.”

“What is this place?”

“We’re in a jail. A warehouse, really.”

Rees cautiously sat up. His movement seemed to have started the blood flowing, and he felt it running down his face. The man beside him moved slightly and the faint light from a window high overhead fell on him. “Matthew,” he said. “You’re here?”

“Yes, they got me too,” Matthew said gloomily. “Thad got away, though.”

“That’s good.”

“How do you feel? Your head looks awful. I thought you were dead when they loaded you in the boat.”

“I’m all right, except I need to get my head sewed up.”

Matthew shook his head and his tone was bitter. “You’re not likely to get it here. Half of these men are wounded. And look. That one over there died about half an hour ago. Bled to death, I think.”

“There’s no doctor to take care of these wounded men?”

“I reckon not.”

Rees’s vision was returning quickly now and he was growing accustomed to the darkness. Most of the men were lying down. Many were sitting braced against the wall. The place was one continuous groan and somewhere a man was crying like a child.

“I’ve got to get this bleeding stopped,” Rees said. He rose to his feet and swayed and for a moment thought he would pass out. Finally the nausea and the dizziness passed. He moved across the room carefully to avoid stepping on the wounded. When he reached the door, he could see light coming in from the outside. He banged on the door and said, “Guard. guard!”

“What do you want, rebel?”

“I’m a doctor. I need to see to these men.”

The voice was rough. “Go to blazes! Let ’em die!”

“You can’t let these men die!”

“You wanna bet?”

The door suddenly opened and Rees was blinded. He squinted and said, “Just let me get some medical supplies and I’ll take care of the wounded here.”

“There wasn’t nothin’ said about that.”

“What’s this, Corporal?”

An officer had come, a tall man in a red uniform.

“This rebel says he’s a doctor. He wants to take care of the wounded.”

“Is that right? You’re a doctor?”

“Yes. My name is Kenyon.
