What to expect for further analyses?

The results analyzed here indicate a homology between departmental field positions and position-takings, reflected in a cluster-specific taste for certain subfields. Following the assumption of the existence of an organizational habitus (Baier and Schmitz 2012), this should also be reflected in similar position-takings on the individual level. It can be assumed that ensembles of departments socialize their PhD students and faculty members in a cluster-specific manner, which is likely to result in similar forms of cognitive structures. These similar groups and their position-specific practices should, consequently, produce idiosyncratic forms of habitus and systems of dispositions. These should manifest in cluster-specific tastes for research topics; in a sense for the legitimate scientific game (as well as in a sense of one’s place); in different perceptions of future job market opportunities; and in different strategies and perceived degrees of autonomy. In this way, narratives (chapter 5) can shed light on how practice is perceived on the basis of capital resources and can ultimately be used to infer further differences in symbolic power and autonomy.

Before turning to the analysis of narratives, let us briefly examine an intermediate step. Cluster-specific cognitive structures do not solely depend on individuals’ current cluster affiliations, but additionally on their trajectories within the field. As a consequence, trajectory analysis will be conducted prior to the analysis of narratives to identify typical career patterns in terms of prestige. In this way, the heritages of current cluster members can be identified. As not all starting positions lead to each of the positions of arrival with the same probability (Bourdieu 1984:126f.) one can assume that, based on the high numbers of successors placed by the elite, elite departments are able to not only place most professors within their own cluster but also within the other clusters. The results of trajectory patterns will serve as an additional basis for the qualitative analysis, with these results included in the investigation of the agents’ perspectives.
