Ownership and Print Rights
Any reviewer must keep in mind who holds the right to any review they write. It is generally understood that reviews are called an intellectual property and the property of the writer. However, if the reviewer is working as a staff reviewer for a site that claims all rights to a review, they have surrendered their claims to it by taking the position and knowing ahead of time such is the case. If the reviewer does not work for such a site and is independent, the ownership of the review remains to them and they may grant author, publisher, or other sites permission to use it to promote the book so long as they are credited with writing the review.
Review sites such as Reader to Reader (http://www.readertoreader.com) and Curled Up With A Good Book (http://www.curledup.com) become the sole owner of reviews done for their sites. To submit these reviews the reviewer, author or publisher must request special permission to use it to promote the book from the review editor or site owner/moderator. Also, publications like The Bloomsbury Review (http://www.bloomsburyreview.com) and Armchair Interviews (http://www.armchairinterviews.com) want first print rights and request, if the review is submitted elsewhere, you specify the fact that they originally published the review. Some of these sites and publications do not want the reviews published again for a certain time period which might be a month or more. Here too, it is proper to request the publication’s agreement ahead of submitting the review to other sites or publications.
An example of crediting a site or publication with publishing the review originally is:
*This review originally appeared in The Bloomsbury Review (or wherever).
Do not assume that any online publication or site that claims rights to a review will not mind if you submit your reviews to other places unless they are a site that welcomes reviews from any review source. Be sure to ask the review editor in advance. Each review publication and site has its own policy about this and it is up to you to learn what it is. A good reviewer will always respect the publication’s policies concerning reviews.
