Chapter 8

It was a dark and stormy night.

Cliché, perhaps, but applicable, Honoria felt, craning her head back to peer up at the imposing façade which was Dunvegan, the seat of the MacLeod lairds for generations.

Lightning crackled overhead, outlining the ancient stone.

“Holy Christ,” Bull murmured beside her. “This place is even scarier in the dark.”

She shot her brother a look as the carriage rumbled to a stop. “You do not really think so, do you?”

His grin flashed wryly. “Nah. Well, I mean, aye, but I like it. It’s interesting. Got character.”

She snorted softly. Character? Yes, it did. But this was once Crowe’s home and, God willing, would be his home again. She would never feel uncomfortable here.

They were hurried inside, and in the bustle of removing damp outer wear and shaking off skirts, Honoria realized to her surprise that she wasn’t tired in the least bit. One would think, after three days of travel, and the boat ride today, she’d be ready for a rest, but…

Smiling hopefully, she turned to the butler. “Might I visit with Laird MacLeod? I know he has likely already dined…?”

The older man bowed, a twinkling in his eyes, and gestured across the ancient hall. “The MacLeod asked to see ye immediately, milady. He’s in his parlor.”

She nodded eagerly, and shot a glance at her brother. “Bull, you made fast work of charming everyone you met last time we were here. Can I assume you can be left alone to fend for yourself?”

The lad made an elaborate bow. “I shall endeavor not to displease, milady,” he intoned, in a stiff mockery of their father’s speech.

The butler, who was outright grinning now, beckoned one of the maids over. “Sarah, show Mr. Lindsay to his room, and have a dinner tray sent up. Nae flirting.”

Of course the pair of them did just that, and Bull sent her a wink over his shoulder. The butler, meanwhile, escorted her to the parlor.

“Lady Honoria Lindsay, milord,” he announced as he opened the door.

Honoria let out a happy gasp as she stepped inside. The room was well-lit, a small fire crackling merrily in the hearth to ward off the chill of the summer storm, and seated in a leather chair before it…

“Laird MacLeod!” she declared in excitement, sweeping across the room. “You are looking splendid!”

The old man reached out to take her hands, and pulled her down. He allowed her to place a kiss on each of his cheeks, then he squeezed her hands and beamed up at her.

“It has been a long while since I’ve felt this good, lassie. And it’s all thanks to ye!”

The last time she’d visited Dunvegan, before her adventure to kidnap Crowe, Laird Duncan MacLeod had been on death’s door. She’d visited with him in this parlor, but he’d sat hunched in a bath chair, a blanket across his legs and a tremor in his frail hands.

Now, though…

Well, he was still frail, but there was color in his cheeks, and he held his chin higher. Someone had trimmed
