Stress
Even if you donât suffer full-blown anxiety or depression, living with diabetes can leave you stressed out. So, your body pumps out hormones and other chemicals to get you ready to fight or run away. Blood glucose levels rise to provide extra energy. This helped when we faced a sabre-toothed cat or a rival tribe: the threat was relatively short-lived and we burnt excess glucose off. However, dealing with an over-demanding boss, financial problems and a chronic disease rarely offer the chance to relax. So, blood glucose levels remain high, which can undermine the control of your diabetes. Exercise and eating patterns can also suffer.
So, be particularly careful about monitoring your blood glucose levels when youâre stressed. Try using relaxation CDs, learning to meditate, massage, hypnotherapy (<www.bamh.org.uk>) or the many books now available to tackle stress.
