I must have fallen asleep, because Mrs. Wright is shaking me.

“Lizzy, Lizzy.”

I sit up with a start.

“It’s okay, Lizzy. I’m just letting you know supper is ready.”

I stand up, running my fingers through my hair.

Mrs. Wright halts me and places both hands on my shoulders. “I’m sorry, Lizzy. I’m sorry I ran and didn’t help you. I panicked. You are a brave young woman. Thank you.” She draws me close for an embrace. It’s the first time she has ever done so and I’m not sure if I like it, yet I do not resist.

“It’s alright, Mrs. Wright, we were all scared.”

She holds me back and looks into my eyes. “Please, Lizzy, call me Lynn.”

“Okay, Mrs. Lynn. I will. Thanks.”

She takes me by the hand and leads me outside to the covered deck.

The hamburgers are excellent. They’re as good as the ones Mr. Wright grills. But there’s no Coke. Amy dropped it when she took off running for Heather’s house. Mrs. Hickman made sun brewed tea. It’s great and better than the Coke anyway. The conversation is lighthearted but every now and then it drifts back to what’s happening now.

“When do you expect Jimmy back?” Mrs. Hickman asks Mrs. Lynn.

“I was expecting him before lunch. I’m worried. Jimmy has never been late a day in his life.”

“I wouldn’t worry too much just yet,” Mr. Hickman says. “He’s probably run into some difficulties that have delayed him. I’m sure he’ll be along soon.”

“Mr. Hickman can you show us how to use the shotgun?” I ask. “I don’t think any of us really knows how to use it.”

“Yes, please do, Tom,” Mrs. Lynn says. “Jimmy showed me some basics but I really don’t know what to do with it.”

“Sure, when we finish here, I’ll show you.”
