LATER that day, just in time for dinner, Mark brought me to Patrick’s house, and now we stood alone together in the bedroom I had once occupied so long ago, when I first came to San Francisco. Mark pulled me close to him, and I felt safer in the warmth of his body. He pulled the curtain aside, and we could just see Alcatraz and millions of lights twinkling around the bay area over the rooftops.

“What a view. You couldn’t ask for anything better.”

“I guess not, but this feels like a prison,” I said rather sadly, thinking of the elaborate alarm system with which Patrick and Terry armed the mansion—and that was when they weren’t asleep. I don’t remember how I got past it that day when I went out to the bridge to end it all, only to find Mark.

“You’ll be fine. Don’t worry so damn much, okay?”

I nodded and agreed, but inwardly I didn’t like being separated from Mark at a time like this. I was going to say something to Mark, but Terry knocked on the door, summoning us to eat.

During dinner there wasn’t much in the way of conversation. I could tell Patrick was dying to hear about the explosion in North Beach. It was on all the major news networks and made the evening editions of all the papers. Mark had even been interviewed by one of the local stations, because he was a police detective and also on the scene. Patrick felt that anyone who made the news had celebrity status. Mark, however, kept silent, only volunteering scant information when he was pressed by either Terry or Patrick. Finally, they gave up asking him.

When dessert and coffee had been served and cleared away, the four of us went into the living room that ran the length of one side of the house on the first floor, from front to back. The sofas and chairs in dove gray and maroon were arranged to face the fireplace in the center, over which hung a large plasma screen television. Adding to the feeling that you were walking into a movie theater, and not the private room of someone’s home, there was a mock ticket booth across from the fireplace, and a popcorn machine and bar. Behind the curtains on the same side was a library of books and movies of every genre.

Seeing all of this, Mark whispered to me, “They didn’t mention anything about watching a movie….”

Patrick must have heard him, because he turned around and said, “Oh, no movies tonight. I thought we would have coffee in here, and watch whatever is on cable for a while.”

When the television came to life, what was on KRON-TV 4 but further coverage of the car fire in the North Beach area. Only now they were saying it was definitely a car bomb. Mark and I exchanged looks, and he shook his head. The petite blonde anchorwoman who was speaking sounded just a little too enthusiastic about the whole thing.
