Gardiner sought a philosophic basis for Anglo-German friendship. He feared that Britain was falling the victim to false values commercialism and cynicism—and that only by associating with Germany could Britain regain her sense of purpose. He believed that the future of European civilization depended upon the working together of British and German youth, both able to rise above the drabness and materialism of the post-war world:

The new Germans are young, brave, ardent, enthusiastic, alive. The modern British are mature, cautious, over-critical, over-prudent, tired… for the Germans, the British, the Scandinavians, there may be a common destiny if they chose to make it… a new unit of quiet strength set between Asia and America.

The Mediterranean peoples have turned aside into the ways of barrenness, seeking those things which moth and rust doth corrupt. The people of France seem to be dying out in regional destinies over which the central authorities in Paris will one day cease to have power. If there is still a cat-like power for anger… there is no strength and sweetness in their hearts.1
