When they reached London, Prunella drove to a quiet old-fashioned hotel where their father had occasionally stayed when obliged to visit London for a Regimental dinner or some reason connected with his official duties in the County.
When Prunella explained who they were, the Manager greeted her effusively and offered his deepest condolences on Sir Roderick’s death.
They had been shown into a large gloomy suite furnished with heavy mahogany with two impersonal rather cheerless bedrooms opening out of it.
Nanette threw herself down in a chair to say,
“Well, we have come to London when I never expected it. But I really cannot think what you are up to, Prunella.”
“Why should I be ‘up to’ anything?” Prunella enquired. “It is an expression I do not care for.”
“Because I know you so well,” Nanette replied. “You hate London and love being at The Manor, bossing everybody about – ”
She stopped suddenly.
“Now I know why you have come away!” she exclaimed. “It is because you are piqued with the Earl for taking over your position as ‘Lady Bountiful’!”
“That is not true,” Prunella objected at once.
“But, of course, it is,” Nanette replied. “You have had everything your own way for so long, running The Hall as well as The Manor and having everybody on the estate saying you are ‘an angel of mercy’. Now they are all fawning on the Earl. Oh, poor Prunella, of course you mind!”
“I don’t. I don’t mind in the slightest! And what you are saying is quite untrue.”
Then, as Prunella spoke, she knew that her protest was half-hearted and Nanette had unerringly put her finger on the real reason for their sudden departure to London.
