Stretching, yoga, and Pilates are so important because these types of exercise help keep muscles long and flexible. Flexibility helps maintain range of motion within the joints, decreasing risk of joint strain or damage. These exercises are also good for improving balance, which can prevent injuries.
There are many great stretching, yoga, or Pilates programs that you can find online for free. Many videos are readily accessible via YouTube, and yogajournal.org is a great resource for different poses. If you are new to yoga and wanted to try it, I would suggest taking a few beginner classes at a studio to learn the proper positions and alignment.
