Chapter 9

Barbara paced the ER waiting room, fighting her tears and the ache in her stomach. She’d ridden with Daniel in the ambulance two hours ago, but when they arrived at the hospital, she wasn’t allowed to go back to the examining rooms with him. All she knew was that the burns on his legs were so severe that the first responders had to sedate him.

“It would have been much worse if you hadn’t found him when you did,” the paramedic said when she explained what happened. “This whole shop could have caught fire.”

The thought made her stop pacing. She hadn’t heard Daniel slip out of bed earlier that afternoon, but when she woke up and didn’t find him in the house, she had a feeling he was in the shop. After letting Leanna go he’d had to work more hours, even with Roman’s help. What she didn’t understand was why there was still so much work to do, but she was staying out of that. It was between Daniel and Roman.

When she went to the shop, she heard Daniel crying out. The door was locked, and she quickly got the spare key, opened it, and found Daniel bent over, slapping at his legs with a tarp. The blowtorch was on the floor, the flame still lit. Daniel’s trousers were on fire, and somehow Barbara managed to grab the tarp, finish extinguishing the fire, and then turn off the torch’s flame. Daniel crumpled to the floor in pain as she ran to the phone shanty to call 911.

She kept asking for updates, but the receptionist had the same answer each time. “As soon as I know something, I will tell you.”

Barbara went back to pacing, hugging her arms around her waist. How had the accident occurred? Daniel was always careful. Safety had always been a priority with him. So was honoring the Sunday Sabbath. It didn’t make sense.

The emergency room doors opened and Barbara saw Roman hurry in. He went straight to her. “How is he?”

“I don’t know.” She glanced at the doors again. “They won’t tell me anything.”

Anger flashed on Roman’s face. “They’ll tell me something.” He stormed over to the receptionist, and Barbara could hear Roman’s angry words as the receptionist told him the same thing. “That’s not gut enough,” he said.

“It’s the only answer I can give you.” The receptionist had spoken in bored tones to Barbara, but now she could see Roman had the woman shaken. Barbara went to him. “This isn’t helping,” she whispered in Dietsch.

Roman gave the woman a disgusted look and then followed Barbara back to the waiting room. It was empty and had been since she and Daniel arrived. “You need to sit down,” he said to her.

“I’m fine standing.”

“Sit,” he said with the same determined tone he’d used with the receptionist.

She complied and then he joined her, sitting on the edge of a chair facing her. “What happened?”

“He was out in the shop using the blowtorch.” She shook her head. “I don’t know why he was working on Sunday.
