Prince Fernando was married at age 6 to a daughter of King St. Louis of France. He and his brother began a civil war against his father, and he was killed at age 19.

15. Iglesia de San Gil. The church is located in the commercial quarter, which in the 12th c. grew just inside the east wall of the medieval city. It is documented as early as 1163, although the current building dates from the 13th-14th c. The chapels were rebuilt in the 15th c., while the stairway leading to the main portal was the result of an 1834 bequest. The portal depicts the Virgin and San Gil, and has a simple rose window. The south doorway, now filled in, narrates the Epiphany and the Flight to Egypt.

The church has dozens of fine tombs and contains large retablos whose themes are the Betrothal of the Virgin and the Mass of San Gregorio. A 16th-c. Santiago and San Jerónimo are on one of the panels on the right side of the retablo.
