None of my friends thought about working. It was the sixties! We worked odd jobs, did what we wanted to do, always had enough money to pay the rent. (Sounds like I was retired then!) I had a beat-up old VW that I drove from the East Coast to the West Coast and back again. I could drive to New York for a penny a mile. I drove all the way down to southern Mexico and stayed for a couple of months; we never thought about money. If I needed a job, I had applied to a half-dozen temp agencies in San Francisco, and they’d send me out for a week here or a week there. I think there was this weird little window of time in the sixties when you could—and did—get by like this. My overriding ambition in my twenties was to drive a cab here in San Francisco, but

I found out you had to be twenty-five, and I was still too young. When I was old enough I came straight back from Mexico, applied for the job, and drove a cab for a few years. I really enjoyed it.
