Watching me, Mamá says, “I have the same reaction every time I see this one. The contrasting messages are… striking.” We spend the next few minutes straightening the flowers, and thinking about María José, even though none of us ever met her. I’m probably too old to be holding Mamá’s hand, but I grasp it nonetheless. I lean into her and whisper, “I’m so glad you’re here, Mamá.” She came so close to being killed. Where would I have built an animita for her had she died in the ocean? She would have just faded away like all the other disappeared people who never returned, and I would have always wondered where she was, like I wonder about Lucila. Papá comes over to us and the three of us embrace. I think we must all be thinking the same thing. We walk home hand in hand in hand, and I realize I no longer feel upset with my parents for sending me away. I guess time and patience really do heal all wounds. Abuela Frida, as usual, was right.
