CHAPTER 43
Anna Meets the Missionaries
As Anna approached the park, she could see two fawn-colored Great Danes in the distance, frolicking under the streetlights. The sight of these stray dogs, which frequented the park looking for food, intensified her sense of urgency. She had seen the dogs before when she and Charles walked through the park, but the sight of them now renewed her fears of him awakening and finding her gone.
Stepping up from the beachâs secluded darkness and into the light of the park was a dangerous moment for Anna. Jose always had one of his guards there whenever one of his escorts was in the area. So she pulled her cap down close to her face, casting a shadow over her eyes.
Surprisingly, more than the usual number of people strolled through the park at this late hour, enjoying the soft ocean breeze. How could she possibly know who, if any, were missionaries?
She dared not look anyone in the eye. Getting that close could mean looking into the face of one of Joseâs guards.
For a brief moment, Anna closed her eyes and whispered a prayer.
âDear God, please, please help me find the missionaries.â
Once again, she surveyed the park, looking for someone unusual, and spotted two men and two ladies standing at the street entrance on the other side of the park. They were handing out literature.
Anna edged closer. At about thirty feet away, she could see their faces had a look of tenderness and care, much different than the harsh, desperate faces of most people. As she stared at them, she glanced down at the materials they were handing out. The men handed out small pamphlets, while the women handed out full sheets of paper with an enlarged picture. After stepping in another few feet, she saw the picture was of Marcos. Underneath was one word in big, bold letters: MISSING.
Praise God! She had found the missionaries.
Anna wanted to run to them, but she had to be careful.
First, she looked to see if Joseâs men were there. Sure enough, two of his guards stood across the street, observing all activity in the park. Despite her disguise, they would certainly recognize her if she moved closer into the light. So she drew back into the darkness.
How can I possibly get the passports to them? My only option is to wait until they leave, and then follow them.
For almost an hour, Anna watched the missionaries as they continued to hand out literature. They tried to talk with everyone, but they especially desired to help the escorts.
The minutes ticked by painfully slow. Finally, they got their materials together and prepared to leave. Still wondering how she could approach them without the guards seeing her, Anna watched as they headed toward a parking lot.
No! They canât just get into a car and drive away. They are my only chance to get help.
Anna continued to watch in disbelief as the missionaries unlocked the car, opened the doors and trunk, and packed everything inside.
Do I have time to go around the park to get to the parking lot? Itâs so far away.
