Chapter 10
The jazz band playing that night in the ballroom was fantastic, and Jack was impressed that he could still remember the steps to many of the dances after sitting it out for so long. It helped that his partner clearly knew what she was doing. “You’re a really good dancer!” he yelled over the loud music.
Helen had been smiling nonstop since they’d started dancing, but her grin seemed to widen a little with the compliment. “So are you!” she called back.
Jack couldn’t remember the last time he’d been with a woman who had made his incessant stream of worried thoughts cease, and he had to admit to himself that this was one of the most enjoyable nights he’d had in a long time. They’d sat and talked for quite a while after the waitress had cleared their dessert plates, but as soon as the band started playing, Jack had recognized the longing look in Helen’s eyes and dragged her out on the dance floor.
They’d been out there ever since, minus a few songs when they’d stopped to catch their breath or get a drink, and Jack was sad to see it was almost eleven when he looked at the clock. Charles would wait if he was asked, but Jack felt guilty doing so. He tried to respect his staff’s time, even if he was paying them for it. Jack himself would hate to be kept waiting in such a way.
As if sensing that he’d need to leave soon, the band started playing a ballad, and Jack was so thankful. He wanted nothing more in that moment than to hold Helen in his arms. “Come here, beautiful,” he said as he grabbed her hand and pulled her into him. Being close to her felt so good that he wanted to groan out loud when her body pressed into his.
“I’m afraid this will have to be my last dance of the night. My driver, Charles, will be here any minute,” he informed her.
Helen looked up at him, and he could see the disappointment in her eyes. “All right.”
“Don’t worry. I fully plan on bothering you again tomorrow.” He held her as tightly to him as he dared while they spun around the dance floor. It was a miracle they weren’t running into people, because he’d scarcely looked away from her flawless face since he’d taken her in his arms.
“If you promise to dance with me like this again, I wouldn’t miss it,” Helen said.
“I promise to dance with you like this as often as you’ll let me.” Jack had locked his eyes on hers, and he prayed she wouldn’t look away. He’d been waiting and dreaming of a moment like this since Anna had left him, and there were times when he thought he’d never experience happiness like this again.
As the song died down, Helen leaned her head on his chest, and he felt a longing that he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in years. Suddenly, he didn’t want to go home alone to his big house.
