James spun away from the door, seething. His hands reached out for the nearest bottle and sent it crashing against the wall. Only the depth of his caring for Angelique kept him from barreling past Lars when the drunk told him to wait. Up to now, placing his trust in Angelique had been easy, but now, with how adamantly she insisted on working with a man who no dog would trust, he doubted her reason.

Worse than that, a statement came back to haunt him in the darting way her eyes avoided his, one he thought he’d dreamed. When you look at me with eyes that know they’ve been deceived. They’d come all this way just for him to be a prisoner again, but this time he didn’t know whose. The note he found in the stove at her house prompted her to inform the sender of the whereabouts of anyone with the name Langdon, obviously not someone connected with the gendarmerie. When Pembroke arrived, he assumed that mystery solved, but Angelique’s behavior caused him to wonder if there weren’t something else in the mix.

Raking his hands through his hair with a growl, James let his pacing take him in the direction of the small table where they’d had their meager breakfast. Slumping with all his weight into a chair, his intent was to brace his elbows on the table to give his head a place to hang, but the messy surface piled high with old newspapers, receipts, and general trash allowed him no room. Giving in to his frustration, he swept a forearm across the surface, sending the majority of paper stuffs crashing to the floor and drifting toward the corners. Having accomplished his goal, he rested his head in his hands for a long while, contemplating the past weeks, and what his road should be now.

When he eventually looked up from his internal debate, his eyes landed on several of the papers still littering the table-top. Tilting his head he reached out to the corner of what looked like a pamphlet buried under loose leaf pages. The blue coloring of the cover sparked a familiarity, making him curious. He recognized the small book the moment his movements revealed it, a Royal Navy ship roster.

The small booklet enjoyed popularity at home, as many Englishmen and women enjoyed following the careers of the various ships named in every new battle update in the news. But what interest would a Dutchman have in the listing, aside from perhaps a glancing interest due to his maritime career?

Pausing to look about the room, noting the complete lack of any sentimental or distinguishing keepsakes related to his profession, James deduced Lars was not a man who took particular pride in his trade. If anything, he struck James as the type of person who would take up a job solely for the monetary benefit rather than any actual interest.

Raising an eyebrow he turned back to the small naval roster, flipping through the first few pages out of boredom and slight curiosity.
