FINALLY DRAGGING HIMSELF into the gathering hall, Keegan squinted in the dim light as all the loud voices hit him at once. Ginny had walked away, leaving him alone in the forest to contemplate his life and actions.
Life had been hard growing up in his home. His father was a bitter bastard who lost the use of his legs after being struck by an enemy blade. He had been too slow to deflect the blow. It had affected Keegan’s entire life, watching his father grow resentful and cold, taking his anger out on his mother because he felt like less of a man. Pushing Keegan to be better, better, the best, so no man would ever best him. Keegan used to believe it was his father’s love for him that used to push him to be the best, but now he knew otherwise. He was ashamed of failing the Mac Carthaigh name and refused to let Keegan fail too, already assumed he had, simply for existing.
There had never been any love in their home until the twins were born. Rowena and Allyn were everything to Harrold, and Keegan and Siobhan could rot. Aye, it had been a rough life for Keegan, always being forced to harden himself to others and push himself further than he could go. But, now… now a lifetime of cynicism had brought him to this precipice. He had finally found his match in the most unlikely of partners. Ginny didn’t break when he pushed, though he knew he pushed too hard. Ginny didn’t run away when all other lassies would have. Ginny cursed and spoke her mind, calling him all manner of foul names, rather than show her true feelings.
But now, now that he had finally opened up, decided to let her in and tell her how he really felt, to shine a light of honor on her instead of a shadow of doubt, now… she had walked away from him.
That was Ginny’s weakness. Where he found it impossible for so long to accept that loving openly and showing a bit of kindness only made a man stronger, she was so used to being underestimated and overlooked, that once someone saw her true potential and loved her for who she truly was, she shut down, unable to believe the truth in it.
Love. Was it true? Was he in love with Ginny? Taking a deep breath and pushing his disheveled blond hair away from his face, he looked around the hall at all the laughing faces. Men, women, and children all mingled together, sharing stories and events of their day. A babe wailed in the corner as a mother desperately attempted to calm the wee thing. Smoke filled the room from the surrounding candles and flickered every time the door opened.
Distracted by the overwhelming realization that he had fallen in love with Ginny, Keegan bumped shoulders with someone and looked down to find Brianna holding Wee Ferghus in her arms. “Och, I am sorry, Bri. I was not paying attention.
