Following the railway track along its western side was the quickest, but not necessarily the safest, route back to the company, but I could not face the prospect of recrossing the landing zone and seeing all that carnage again. Apart from that consideration, exploding ammunition, shells, and mortar bombs were creating a deadly danger around the burning gliders.

As I hurried towards D Company's positions, I could see a number of enemy tanks cruising around and setting fire to those gliders that were not yet burning. They faced little opposition, since most of our antitank guns and mortars were destroyed during the landings, and presumably the Tempest and Typhoon tank busters were still busy supporting the landbased forces crossing the Rhine.
