Chapter Two

Juror E-22

Black or white, this was a clear case of a crazy-ass, jealous woman who couldn’t have her way. Nobody had to die. What kind of trick was Pussy Anderson? How could she shoot a man … any man in the head and expect to get away with it?

I was more than disappointed about being on the jury. I attempted to answer many of the questions given to me without much thought, but for whatever reason my answers led me to what I considered hell. I’d heard about this case on the news. I remembered thinking what a damn shame it was. It seemed to me that Pepe Jackson had hooked up with the wrong woman and it cost him his life. Had it been my cell phone that she smashed on the floor, well, I couldn’t say because I wasn’t that kind of man. I was eager to hear Pussy’s self-defense claim, but it could be a while before that information was provided.

For now, along with the other jurors, I had returned from lunch and was waiting on Mr. Phillips to cross examine Blake Monroe. I felt sorry for the young man. He had literally watched his friend get killed in front of him. His testimony came across as very credible, and I suspected that he had no reason to lie.

“How are you today?” Mr. Phillips asked Blake.

“Not too good,” he replied, wiping snot from his nose.

“I can understand. I know you don’t want to be here, but I need you to clarify certain things that you testified to today.”

Blake nodded then released a soft “okay” into the microphone.

“Great. Let’s take a moment to go back to the party where you and Pepe Jackson were hanging out. Do you remember when you told the court that the two of you were kind of kicking it and having a funky good time together?”

“I don’t recall saying all that, but we were together.”

“Well, you said the two of you were at a party. I assume you were having a good time, especially if the two of you went upstairs with several chicks, right?”

“I guess so.”

“Good time or no good time, Mr. Caldwell asked you about the usage of drugs, didn’t he?”

Mr. Phillips stroked his chin as he waited for Blake to answer. It was apparent that he was trying to intimidate the kid by gazing into his eyes.

“Yes.”

“And you said, uh … let me get my notes to be sure that I quote you correctly.” Mr. Phillips looked at his notes then peered over his silver-framed glasses to look at Blake. “You said something to the effect of Pepe didn’t get down like that. Basically, other people were doing a little somethin’-somethin’, but not Pepe.”

“Yep. That’s what I said. He didn’t get down like that.”

Mr. Phillips pulled the glasses away from his face and held them in his hand. “Really? When you say he didn’t get down like that, did you mean that he didn’t get down like that on
