WHAT I RECOMMEND FOR EAR INFECTIONS
PREVENTING EAR INFECTIONS
1. Lifestyle—nutrition. Breast-feed your infant for at least six to twelve months; do not feed your infant while he is lying on his back; do not put a child to bed with a bottle of juice or milk. Avoid giving cow’s milk prior to four months of age. Make sure his vitamin D level is optimal. Minimize pacifier use; encourage sugarless lozenges or gum containing xylitol in children old enough to chew gum.
2. Lifestyle—environment. Do not smoke, and do not allow others to smoke around your child; avoid exposure to wood smoke, other irritants, and allergens. Avoid putting your child in day care until he’s at least 12 months old; if your child is in day care, avoid crowded settings (more than six children per room), especially during the fall and winter when cold viruses abound. Advocate for clean air, and minimizing air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide.
3. Biochemical—medications. Get your child immunized against pneumococcus and influenza. If you suspect allergies as a contributing factor, ask for a referral to a pediatric allergist for evaluation and treatment.
4. Biochemical—supplements. Consider probiotic supplements containing Lactobacillus GG to reduce recurrent infections.
5. Lifestyle—exercise. Have your child exercise his eustachian tube by blowing up balloons or chewing gum.
Take your child for a professional evaluation if he
• Is less than twelve months old
• Has a temperature higher than 102°F
• Refuses to drink liquids
• Has severe ear pain for more than one day
• Seems sicker than usual, or you are concerned about his appearance or behavior
• Has ear pain that has not improved within one or two days with home remedies
