Plastic posts litter the moor, marking the location of trays containing medicated grit so the gamekeepers can find them again.

During each drive, groups of Red Grouse are flushed by a line of noisy, flag-waving beaters and pushed towards the guns. The sport is fast and furious and the guns, concealed in their grouse butts, expect large numbers of birds to be presented as targets (the record is 2,929 grouse shot on a single day – by a party of just eight people). It is an expensive day out. On the most highly esteemed moors a day’s shooting might cost £2,000 or more for each person. Participants demand good value for money and plenty of grouse to shoot at. Enter the graceful, elegant and unwelcome Hen Harrier, sweeping over the moors on the hunt for pipits, voles and perhaps even a Red Grouse or two.
