The role of skin mites
Medical research has often pointed to a microscopic skin mite called Demodex folliculorum as a potential factor in rosacea. We all have Dermodex mites living in the hair follicles of our facial skin – they are part of the skin biome. But it’s known that rosacea sufferers have an increased density of them.
However, according to recent research by the National University of Ireland, it’s not the mites themselves that trigger rosacea; instead, it’s the bacteria that live inside their digestive tracts. The bacterium Bacillus oleronius, which was isolated from inside a Demodex mite, was found to produce molecules that provoke an immune reaction in rosacea patients.
Bacillus oleronius usually live inside Demodex mites in a mutually beneficial relationship. But when the mites die, the bacteria are released and leak into surrounding skin tissues, triggering tissue degradation and inflammation.7
Those with rosacea have also been shown to have too much of an anti-microbial peptide called cathelicidin. This is a small protein in the body’s defense system, normally known for its role in protecting the skin against infection. But in rosacea patients, the overload of peptides causes an increase in inflammation.8
Although in its early stages rosacea may look less severe than psoriasis, on the farm we’ve found that it’s a stubborn condition that’s difficult to resolve. Tackling rosacea with the GSS requires time, patience, and dedication to the recommended dietary changes.
