Chapter Nine

That night, after Rachel and Danny left the clinic, she drove down the dark Main Street. Lamplight showed not another person in sight. As they passed the diner, she noticed the absence of Dwayne Claridge’s truck in the parking lot. He wasn’t working tonight and she had a fun idea. “You want to have dinner at the café tonight? I don’t feel like cooking and they don’t close for another forty minutes.”

“Yay! Can I have a cheeseburger?” Danny bounced up and down on his seat.

“Of course.” She pulled a U-turn and parked the clunker at the side of the building.

Inside the warm diner, the bell tinkled above the door as they entered and seated themselves in one of the booths. With the late hour, they had the place to themselves.

A young woman wearing a pink waitress uniform and carrying a notepad came out to wait on them. “Hi there. I’m Cherise. Do you already know what you want?”

“I think so. Do you still make chocolate-marshmallow milkshakes?” Rachel asked.

Cherise cracked the gum inside her mouth and smiled. “Sure.”
