NONCONFORMIST CHURCH RECORDS

The Church of Scotland experienced many divisions in its history, creating daughter Presbyterian churches that had their own structure and records. Nonconformist, or dissenting, denominations like Baptists and Quakers were also established in Scotland. Episcopalian and Roman Catholic churches were also present, mostly in the east and the north of the country. Non-conformist ministers could not perform legal ceremonies until 1834. So, it is likely that a great many irregular marriages prior to this date were not marriages by consent (see chapter 7), but by non-authorized ministers. However, under Scots law, there appears to have been little difference. If your ancestor disappears from the OPR for a number of years or you can’t find him in the first place, it is possible that he attended a nonconformist church during that period.

One way to learn what nonconformist records are available is to consult the National Index of Parish Registers by D.J. and A.E.F. Steel, which you can borrow from <archive.org/details/nationalindexofp12stee>.
