Chapter Seven: The Dinner
Despite being a city boy, one thing I know how to do is build a fire, as long as I have some matches. That was my job growing up. I stacked the fire wood in the summer, brought a bundle in every day during the Winter, and then naturally I would be the one who built the fire.
When I first started making them, I was pretty bitter about the whole thing, having to be the one who did all of the dirty work in the heat and the cold. After a few years, I learned to enjoy the process. I appreciated the order of it all. I liked discovering what works best and what doesn't work well at all.
That's why I was so talented at my job in later years. I loved being able to put things in order. I was able to manage my time, skills, and resources. It was like getting fuel to the fire and keeping everybody warm.
So while Lindsey finishes preparing our dinner, I gather a few sticks for kindling, then place them in decent order to start a fire. It would have been nice to have some charcoal for the occasion, but I have to learn how to deal with the limited resources nature leaves us out here, plus the match sticks Lindsey has afforded me.
“Where is everyone else, anyway?” I ask Lindsey. It seems like a fair question. I am surprised that we are the only ones around when it's almost dinner.
“Oh! They're actually all out giving guided tours this weekend!” she says. “But Peter and Sophie will be back before the night is over. Their tour is a one day thing. The rest of them do a whole weekend adventure experience, so they'll be back tomorrow afternoon I think.”
“So we have to eat this whole chicken ourselves?” I ask in a way that makes it clear that I'm not disappointed. It's been awhile since I had that last slice of pizza and my stomach is aching for something to eat.
Lindsey ignores me, so I guess she knows how I'm feeling. I'm sure they have days where meat is scarce and they have to live off of whatever nuts and berries are available out here.
I find some moss and leaves to help me get the fire going, getting on my hands and knees as I strike the match and light it, gently blowing the flames into a steady wave of heat. They have a few logs lying around, but it looks like they have to cut and prepare new ones on a daily basis to keep up. Maybe I can help them with that in the future.
I toss two of the logs into the fire pit and close it off with the make shift grill they have set up for roasting meals. Lindsey has sliced the meat into individual legs, wings, breasts, and thighs so they cook faster than if it were whole. That's a relief, since I don't know how long I can run on fumes here.
